Like most people, I go through a ton of headphones. From lost ones and those with one-sided sound to pairs with shorted-out wires and the ones that simply give up, I’m always in need of a new set. That’s why, …

As far back as I can remember I’ve been a writer As far back as I can remember I’ve been a writer. I wrote any and everything. At @howard1867 when I wrote for @thehilltophu, I did a profile on @MarvetBritto because she was the flyest publicist I knew and I wanted to be just like her. It’s when I realized my calling was to tell the stories of the amazing Black people around me.

Since then, in my own way, I’ve done that. Every room I’ve walked into I’ve taken people I know along for the ride. Assigning them stories, profiling their lives, highlighting their businesses, featuring their products, sharing their travel adventures...whatever. When and where I can I speak their names. It never occurred to me that someone would walk into a room and speak mine.

I mean why would it when people who spoke highly of me and (seemingly) freely put me on to opportunities, turned on me with the quickness and used their voice to walk into rooms and say I wasn’t creative, wasn’t a good writer and didn’t deserve to be in the rooms I was. Or when supervisors accused me of “stealing shine” (For people who know me this has to give huge laughs. I barely tell people where I work) and declared that they would give me said shine where they saw fit. *I may not brag on myself, but I damn sure recognize that I’m dope af. Give me shine? Ha!*

Then @kelleesetgo walked into a @travelandleisure room, spoke my name and the names of so many others, and I went from dreaming of one print story byline to being on internal panels and being asked by awesomesauce EIC @jacquigiff herself to be Travel + Leisure’s first Guest Editor ever. I had the opportunity to borrow the publication’s most read section, Intelligent Traveler, helmed by my new fave @pbbrady1 to do what I’ve always done best, tell the stories of dope Black people.

The result is nearly 10 personally curated pages of Black Travel stories by amazing writers like @sheisimanib, @misterlevius and @tanyachristian for the February issue out TODAY! So grab a copy on stands (safely!) or get a digital download, and tag T+L in a photo of your favorite story from the section, so they can see how important it is to have captivating Black Travel stories like these told in every issue ❤️.

Me, looking for the U.S. government’s common sen Me, looking for the U.S. government’s common sense back in 2020 when nearly every other country was requiring COVID tests before you could board a flight 😑.

As usual, the U.S. is #latelikeCNN to the party (where are the OG Twitter heads that remember when/why that hashtag popped off?), and FINALLY announced that we will be requiring travelers to our country to have COVID tests 72 hours before boarding their flights. While I definitely agree that this is a good decision, even if it is nearly a year and a few hundred thousand lives too late, I can’t help but think of some of the possible downsides.

For starters, many destinations, like the Caribbean for example, may not be able to handle the demands of processing tests in a timely manner due to lack of proper infrastructure. Another downside is that small accommodation owners and Airbnb hosts may suffer. I foresee major brand hotel chains creating partnerships with large medical companies in order to guarantee hassle free testing to guests as part of their stay, and the reality is smaller hotels and Airbnb hosts simply can’t compete. That means people who want to travel, but don’t want to worry about finding reputable medical facilities or taking chances on timely results, may stop booking more local accommodations in favor of convenience. Despite the likely higher prices.

It’ll be interesting to see how this new regulation plays out. What do you think about the U.S. requiring testing before entry? Will this change your mind about any upcoming travels?

Not the cutest throwback photo, but definitely one Not the cutest throwback photo, but definitely one of my faves. This is me getting a COVID test on Monday in the middle of the Mara in Kenya before flying home. My tour operator, @micatosafaris, flew in a doctor from Nairobi to test the group to make sure we were safe before heading home. I don’t know about anyone else, but peace of mind about my health and safety, and the health and safety of those I’m around during this time is extremely important to me. And after nearly two weeks of riding through the wilderness with strangers, this convenience was definitely appreciated. Now of course testing is not the be all and end all, but I truly believe that extra mile services like this will make the difference between choosing one brand over another when folks are ready to travel again. Showing the ways that companies value our dollar AND our safety will be more important than ever, and Micato is clearly one of the brands looking to lead the way in making travel safe again.

What COVID safety services would you like to see from brands whenever you’re ready to see some world again? Would offering services like this help you choose where to spend your travel coins?
